Born in Venice in 1935, Tobia Scarpa is the son of the famous architect Carlo Scarpa. With his wife Afra (née Bianchin) born in Montebelluna in 1937, he began working with Venini in Murano in the 1950s. In 1960, the couple founded their design studio in Montebelluna. Together, they worked for companies such as Flos, Cassina, B&B Italia, and Knoll. Their work ranges from glass to furniture, lighting, interiors, and architecture. They use a wide variety of materials and emerging technologies. Their design aesthetic is decidedly modernist, and the pieces emphasize elegance and comfort. At the same time, Scarpa’s pieces are admired for the ease with which they complement more classic designs.
