Edward Foxhall of Camden discovered sandalwood on the Isle of Pines, New Caledonia, in 1840. Unknown in Europe before the end of the 19th century, the noble spicy wood had a proud pedigree: 'candana' in Sanskrit or 'sandal' in Arabic. A refined ointment for the body and hair, it warded off anxiety and mingled, indescribably, with all the fumes of Asian incense.
