The Consulate, Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821) knows that it is necessary to distribute his portrait to impose himself on the French. He will be the main builder of his legend. All media are used, from sculpture to snuffboxes and fans. The multiplicity of objects with the effigy of the Emperor or representing the imperial symbols constituted an extraordinary means of propaganda of the Napoleonic legend.

But with the Restoration, the Bonapartists must begin an underground fight, multiplying the seditious objects. The death of the Emperor in 1821 making him less dangerous in the eyes of the royalists, the productions of the figure of the hero and his main feats of arms resumed with force . The Second Empire (1852) will formalize the imperial legend through orders for sculptures for public squares or paintings for museums. Although the Second Empire took over official propaganda, the fall of the regime in 1870 put Napoleon's image to sleep for twenty years. We had to wait for the awakening of national sentiment in the 1890s to see the image of the hero reappear, as he has never ceased to be since.
